Bring your Chi Alpha team to Denver!

We love Chi Alpha and we love hosting Chi Alpha teams for mission trips to Denver. We have hosted teams from Arkansas, Texas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, and Colorado over the last 8 years. The teams we have hosted have been a HUGE help to us in our mission of following Jesus and loving our neighbors. We host two kinds of trips - Spring Break (March) and a week-long summer Sports Camp. Check out the info below and then let us know if you have any questions!

Sports Camp

We host a free, week-long sports camp for neighborhood kids every summer. This year’s camp is the week of June 9. Kids participate in soccer or basketball. Camp “coaches” do not need to be athletic. Seriously. Only a handful of people need to be “head” coaches of sports. Others lead small groups, help with rally times - dancing, singing, high energy, assist with registration and snacks. There is something for everyone!

Spring Break

We host trips the first three weeks of March. The trips are focused on loving and serving our neighborhood. See more details below on the outreach tab. We like to have a minimum commitment of 10 students. If you think it unlikely that you’ll have at least 10 students, still reach out to us. We often host more than one team at a time so a group with smaller numbers could be okay.

  • Students will experience a variety of opportunities throughout the trip. We serve meals at homeless shelters, do street evangelism (no standing on a box on the corner but starting up conversations with people; we also do training first), serve at three different underserved schools - spending time with students as well as organizing and cleaning as needed, take fresh-made cookies and notes of encouragement into local businesses, prepare uplifting care packages and take them door to door - over 4000 distributed to date.

Sports camp - most of the energy goes into the camp however, we include several other outreach opportunities as well.

  • Most teams arrive on late Saturday or Sunday and leave the next Saturday morning. Sunday includes an orientation and outreach on Colfax Ave which has been dubbed the longest wickedest street in America. Google it. :) Monday - Thursday consists of outreach. Friday is a fun day.

In the evenings, we plan times of worship and teaching. The teaching usually focuses on calling and life after school.

The schedule for sports camp is slightly different with Monday being a training and setup day. Tuesday-Friday being camp days with afternoon outreaches. Fun day can be either the Sunday prior or Saturday after camp.

For all teams, we provide a student guide that includes daily devotionals, the schedule, and other pertinent information.

  • We partner with a local church that lets teams sleep in several classrooms - on the floor…like a real missions trip! :) The floors are carpeted but hard so we recommend bring a sleeping pad. There is a kitchen where most meals are prepared.

There are no showers. There is a nice recreation center a half mile from the church that can be used for showers (and for shooting some hoops if time allows). Plan for two showers during your trip and lots of deodorant. Also, we have no humidity so that helps!

  • We are located about 2.5 miles east of downtown Denver. The neighborhood has a rich history including being at the forefront of racial integration in the 1960s and beyond. It is a diverse neighborhood ethnically and economically. To that end, we believe we’ve been called to build and economically and racially diverse church as demonstrated the in the gospel.

  • We regularly spend time with current and past Chi Alpha alum. We’re aware of the struggles of transitioning from XA to the local church after college. During our evening teaching times, we take time to talk about Calling and life after XA and how the local church isn’t Chi Alpha but is still relevant to a thriving faith. Besides fueling a passion for marketplace ministry, we want the trip to be an encouragement to your team.

Your team will spend quite a bit of time with our pastor and his family in their home including a world-famous (or maybe just XA famous) meal of enchilada casserole.

  • Minimal! We don’t charge a fee for the trip. The costs include travel to Denver and minimal fuel costs while you’re here, $20/person lodging, food - mostly self-prepared meals but do include $30/person for two restaurant meals, $10/person for showers (see lodging tab), $10/person for taking the light rail downtown, $ for fun day - we have a lot of free outdoor activities so this could just be fuel costs. That’s about it! There might be a few dollars needed for incidentals. We cover all outreach expenses.

My experience at The Hills Church was simply amazing! I cannot put into words how great this experience was. I stepped WAY outside of my comfort zone which I wanted to do but I was totally caught off guard by how much I stepped out to go above and beyond by serving God in a way that I never thought that I could serve God.

My favorite part of the trip was street evangelism. Dani and I had the opportunity to pray for four guys. We were there to listen to their stories and to teach them to depend on God. Once again thank you for everything, you truly make Denver a better place.
